Chapter 5: Confessions and Chemistry

The school bell echoed through the corridors, signaling lunch break. Bella Weston slipped out of her classroom, weaving through the noisy hallways until she reached the quiet spot behind the science block—her and her best friend’s secret escape from the chaos.

Rhea Thompson was already there, cross-legged on the grass, scrolling through her phone with a sandwich half-eaten beside her.

“Took your sweet time,” Rhea said, looking up. “Let me guess—you were mentally preparing to rant?”

Bella flopped down beside her, dramatically pressing a hand to her chest. “You know me too well.”

Rhea smirked. “So? Spill it.”

Bella didn’t speak right away. She pulled her hair into a messy bun and looked up at the sky. “It’s about Adrian.”

Rhea raised an eyebrow. “Ah. The Academic Arch-nemesis slash Walking Headache.”

“Exactly.” Bella gave a half-smile. “But… I don’t know anymore. Today in the chemistry lab—we were paired for the experiment.”

Rhea groaned. “Let me guess. He tried to take over like he always does?”

Bella nodded. “At first, yeah. Classic Adrian. But then... something weird happened.”

Rhea leaned in, curious. “Weird like 'he didn’t try to compete with you for once' weird?”

Bella laughed softly. “Kind of. He was actually… nice? He listened to my method, didn’t argue, and when I messed up the measurements, he just helped fix it. No snark, no smugness. Just… calm.”

Rhea blinked. “Are we sure this was Adrian Knight and not an alien in disguise?”

“I asked myself the same thing,” Bella murmured. Then she grew quiet. “But that’s not all. When he looked at me—like really looked at me—I felt something. Something I didn’t want to feel.”

Rhea softened. “Bella…”

Bella shook her head. “It’s ridiculous, right? I’ve spent half my life competing with him. He’s always been the annoying genius who gets under my skin. And now, suddenly, one lab session and I’m—what? Crushing on him?”

“It’s not ridiculous,” Rhea said gently. “Feelings are messy. And sometimes, they sneak up on you in the middle of a chemistry experiment.”

Bella chuckled. “Leave it to Adrian Knight to confuse me more than actual chemistry.”

Rhea nudged her shoulder. “Whatever you’re feeling, just be honest with yourself. You don’t have to define it today. But maybe… it’s okay to stop seeing him as the enemy.”

Bella looked at her best friend, grateful. “You always know what to say.”

“Obviously,” Rhea grinned. “That’s why I’m the therapist of this friendship.”

The two of them burst into laughter, the weight on Bella’s chest a little lighter now. She still didn’t have all the answers—but for now, sharing her heart was enough.
